Michael L Maynard – 101 Japanese Idioms

What it says. Explains Japanese idioms, quite a fun read even if you’re not studying the Japanese language yourself.

Douglas Robinson – Becoming a Translator

For all your aspiring translators. Written mainly for commercial translators, but the author makes lots of good points about translating and its ethics in general. Highly recommended if you aim to be a translator or even if you already are one.

A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar

Recommended for beginning Japanese students. Pretty self-explanatory, but also covers not-so-common expressions.

E-Books

Beginner Level

Kanji in Mangaland Vol. I
A book on how to write and memorize Kanji. The mnemonic device used is very clever and made me chuckle, a fun read too!

Kanji de Manga Vol. II
Another book about Kanji. Uses manga pages to demonstrate the use of the Kanji. Fun to read, the scan is a bit low-quality (you can read everything clearly, though) and the book is quite short, sadly.

Intermediate Level

A Guide to Reading and Writing Japanese
Don’t let the title fool you. This is basically a Kanji treasure chest, with over 1,000 Kanji. There’s also a Kanji list by stroke count and a tutorial how to write hiragana, katakana and Kanji (also suited for beginners).

Making Sense of Japanese
Subtitled “what the textbooks don’t tell you”. About subjectless sentences, the difference between wa and ga and the finer points of the Japanese language. Highly recommended!

Japanese Core Words and Phrases
Subtitled “things you can’t find in a dictionary”. Focuses on idioms and demonstrative pronouns, among others. Also highly recommended!

Software

JWPce
A lightweight Japanese dictionary software. All features you’d ever need.
Just unrar it and you’re good to go.

Misc Stuff

FoxIt Reader (lightweight document reader for reading pdfs)
WinDJView (for reading djvus)

For now, this is all I have to offer. I’m sure more will get added soon, though!
